Filip Van Overmeiren co-authors European Commission report on cross-border healthcare

Access to healthcare in cross-border situations

16 February 2017

Although cross-border healthcare has existed for a long time, the adoption of Directive 2011/24/EU on the application of patients’ rights in cross-border healthcare has revived interest in this topic. Moreover, it has opened another legal path to access cross-border healthcare, next to the coordination Regulation 883/2004 and purely national legal provisions. It may provide cross-border patients with more options, but at the same time makes the interaction between distinctive legal instruments more complex. The report analyses the legal framework with regard to cross-border healthcare, its merits and its flaws, and makes proposals for policy review.
