Alain Laurent Verbeke interviewed on Terzake television program

Alain Laurent shares his expertise in family courts

11 June 2018

Greenille by Laga partner Alain Laurent Verbeke was recently interviewed on "Terzake", a current affairs television program broadcast by the VRT (national public-service broadcaster for the Flemish Region). In this interview, Alain Laurent shares his expertise regarding family courts and the new Belgian Mediation Act.

The report tells of an Antwerp family court judge who often concludes cases through an agreement reached between family members, without having to issue a court judgment. This judge advocates this mediation approach, as agreements reached among the parties involved are more easily put into practice than court judgments.

Alain Laurent argues that family matters, and even any other conflict, should first be subject to mandatory mediation before resorting to family courts. This would help ease judiciary burden and ensure tax money is spent more effectively, as it is still possible in many cases to reach an agreement without a judge's involvement.
