Verwilghen Act: End of the transitional period in sight

Expat News No. 6, June 2009

On 10 August 2007, the Belgian Health Insurance Contracts Act was enforced retrospective to 1 July 2007. This act is more commonly known as the Verwilghen Act. This article for Expat News (No. 6, June 2009) exposes the collective policies concerned by the act. The Verwilghen Act aims at providing better protection to insured parties being individuals ora collective. Collective health insurance policies that were taken out after 1 July 2007, must be entirely in compliance with the Act whereas a 2 year transitional period has been underway for these that were in existence prior to this date. As a result, the duties of information for these policies in transition only have to comply with the Act as of 1 July 2009.
